January 2025 Update from McClelland Adult Centre

As the first month of 2025 draws to a close, we are delighted to see our residents settling back into their routines with smiles all around. The new year started on a cheerful note, with stories of Christmas adventures and family reunions shared among the residents.

A Special Christmas Day Celebration

For those who stayed at the Centre over Christmas, the day was made extra special with a delicious lunch featuring gammon, vegetables, roast potatoes, and pudding. A heartfelt thank you goes to the Rotary President of Bonza Bay Club, the President of the Bonza Bay Annes – Willem and Christal – and my wife for dedicating their Christmas Day to preparing this wonderful meal for the residents.

Busy Days at the Centre

While many residents spent time at home, the Centre remained a hive of activity. The maintenance team worked tirelessly, repainting bathrooms, passages, and making general repairs throughout the premises. Their efforts have left the Centre looking fresh and welcoming for the new year.

A Warm Welcome to Our New Residents

We are excited to welcome all our new residents to McClelland Centre. We hope your time with us will be enjoyable and fulfilling. It is worth noting that, for the first time in many years, we are fortunate to have a waiting list for prospective residents.

Important Reminders for Parents

For the benefit of our new parents and as a refresher for others, here are a few important reminders:

  • Weekend Collections: Please inform us in advance when you will be collecting your child over the weekend and when they will be returning. This is crucial for meal preparations, which are done early in the morning.
  • Medication: All medication must be collected and returned to the Sister on duty. If she is not in her office when you arrive, please be patient, as she may be attending to another resident.
  • Alternate Collection Arrangements: If someone else will be collecting your child, please provide us with their name and ID number in advance. Without this information, we cannot allow your child to leave with them. This is non-negotiable and ensures the safety of our residents.
  • Switchboard Update: The Centre’s upgraded switchboard is accessible at 043 7411193. Follow the prompts to connect to the respective hostel (e.g., press 1 for Crewe, press 2 for Brent).
  • Call Times: Calls to residents during the week are only allowed after 16:30. We cannot call residents out of the Work Centre for phone calls as it disrupts others. For urgent matters, please contact the office.

Progress on Centre Renovations

Our repainting project is nearly complete, with only the Hall and Wood Work Centre remaining. Once these are finished, we will move on to repainting the window frames.

Upcoming Fundraising Event: McClelland 1000

Mark your calendars for the McClelland 1000 (Pedal for Power), a cycle ride from McClelland to Cape Town on 22 February 2025. This fundraising initiative, led by Mac and me, aims to raise funds for installing a solar power system to reduce our exceptionally high electricity costs.

You can support this project by following our social media campaign on our Facebook page.

We’re excited about what lies ahead for McClelland Centre in 2025 and thank you for your continued support. Let’s make this year a memorable one!
